Year started: 2002

Type of work: I paint primarily still life paintings in the style of contemporary realism but also complete landscape and portrait paintings on occassion, all of which are done in oil. I also work with pencil and other drawing media.

COSE Member since: 2007

About: After having studied art history at Princeton and having worked at Christie's auction house in New York City selling primarily 19th century European paintings, I decided that I was more interested in the creative side of the arts. I began studying painting in earnest in 1997 and started selling paintings consistently in 2002. I have sold and currently sell paintings in New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Miami and many other places. I am part of a growing movement of artists reviving a traditional arts education (19th century French atelier system)and applying the techniques learned in that environment in the contemporary arts environment.

Connect: I connect the two out of necessity. I am interested in business to the extent that successful business presence allows for sales which allow for the financial environment within which I am able to make the next painting. My goal, however, is to be a successful artist. Business knowledge is a means toward accomplishing that. Making the next painting is the end.

Advice: I firmly believe that artists should embrace good business practices, especially in the areas of marketing and the development of relationships (both with galleries and with individual clients). Most of the people capable of buying paintings come from environments where this practice is the common language. Speaking this language in the presentation of ones work promotes comfort and understanding in those approaching the arts from that perspective, whether it be a successful business person looking to buy work or a gallery owner looking to sustain his or her livelihood. Artists often fail miserably in these areas. In doing so, artists often fail to communicate the importance of the very things they fight so hard to express, making it seem less important.
